Glycols from Fauth.
The most economically important dihydric alcohols or glycols are ethylene glycol (also monoethylene glycol) and propylene glycol (more precisely propanedi-1,2-ol). In industry, they are found primarily in the production of synthetic fibres and plastics, i.e. polyesters such as PET, in textile auxiliaries, in polyester waxes and in heat transfer fluids, cooling and antifreeze or de-icers. Likewise, glycols are often used as solvents and additives for varnishes, paints and detergents. Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are clear, colourless and almost odourless as well as hygroscopic substances, which are used as carrier and carrier solvents because of their solubility and emulsifying properties. They can be mixed with water and many polar organic solvents such as alcohols and reach their sensitivity to oxidation in the absence of UV light only above 150 °C.
Unlike ethylene glycol, propylene glycol is without risks to health. It is approved in the EU as a food additive under E 1520 and in the US by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) and is used in medicines, toothpastes, skin creams and chewing gums, but also in e-cigarettes as a base liquid. With ethylene glycol, cold mixes can be achieved up to a freezing point of -48 °C, with propylene glycol up to a freezing point of -57 °C.
